On Sunday 8th August the Triangle Market Sails hosted a Smoothie Bike.

The Bike - basically a food blender powered by mad cycling – was a part of the launch of Lowestoft High Street's effort to become the Street That Won The Street That Saved, the competition designed to help us waste less food.

The figures are astonishing. The world, and us, throws away thirty percent of the food we buy. And not only does this throw away money, it chucks the planet under a bus.

So Hubbub welcomed the great and the good, as well as the enthusiastic and vocal participants.

The ten households who had signed up to represent Suffolk were there. Lorraine and David from Uncle Sid's, Christine and Joe, Sue and Harry, and the rest (someone was late – you know who you are). Lorraine said some uplifting and heartfelt words, Hubbub's Tessa Tricks expertly MC'd the whole gig, and we learned about the millions of oranges we throw away EVERY DAY. Does that make sense at all? Not to mention the spuds and the bread and the milk, and the sad remains of rocket liquefying in the deep recesses of the fridge.

The Mayor, Alan Green, was there, who briefly and amusingly speechified. James Mallinder, Conservative Councillor, explained the importance of saving the planet and how that's supported by everyone; Janet Craig, Labour councillor, also fully supported the principles of it all, and created a banana and blackberry smoothie on the Smoothie Bike; Wendy Brooks, Lowestoft Town Councillor, newly elected and seemingly everywhere every moment of the day, added her positive and supportive voice.

It was heartening to hear and see our local representatives adding their weight to the significance of the cause. It was even more heartening to see High Street residents getting together and doing something. It might not change the world, but by god, it certainly brightened up Sunday.
