Lowestoft High Light 1914 and World War One

This postcard is amazingly franked 31st July 1914, just four days before Britain declared war . The message reads "Having a [illegible] time here. [Illegible illegible] great excitement in the camp here about the war. We are [illegible] to a nice? tea."

On 28th July 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This presumeably is the 'war' referred to in the postcard. On 1st August 1914 Germany invaded France, by careering through Belgium, the German Chancellor infamously describing the Treaty of London (1839) which guaranteed Belgian neutrality, as a "scrap of paper".

On 4th August, Britain declared war on Germany.

The postcard shows Lowestoft's High Light, still there, and a tram heading towards the town centre.
